Chives, Aliium schoenoprasum

Chives ~ Allium schoenoprasum

$5 per 9cm pot (SOLD OUT)

You must have an organic chive plant in you garden (in my humble opinion), scrambled eggs or tofu aren’t worth having without them!

With their mild onion flavour they’re a perfect intro for kids to the world of onions or for people whom aren’t great fans of strong onion.  The pinky purple flowers are edible too.

They die back in Winter but in my experience only briefly before they come back up again.  Harvest by cutting about 5cm from the ground and new blades will come up, you should get 2 -3 harvest per bulb in the season.

When the plant has more than 6 – 12 bulbs divvy it up in Autumn.  Go here for advice on dividing herbs.

Plant in a sunny situation with good rich soil.  Chives work well within a herbal ley for your orchard too, or around your roses to keep the aphids at bay.
