Hellooo! Jack Frost!

New beds getting the frost treatment

And here comes the frosts at long last (for us here in Foxton, sorry South Island) I was just about getting complacent!  Luckily though I did have my frost cloth on my urinikas that have only just started sprouting (under cover).

Frosty cloche

The herbs tolerated it well, looking all sparkly and lovely..

Except poor Pineapple sage (Salvia Elegans)..

Frost burnt pineapple sage (salvia elegans)

Not so elegant with frost burn..

Frost cloth is going on her every night now, hopefully not too late like it was for this poor blighter..

Not sweet

It’s a bugger to find out your plant isn’t frost tolerant until after a frost!  This was what I called an ice cream plant but is actually called something else, and ye gads can’t for the life of me remember the name..has/had purple flowers that smelled like vanilla (or ice cream!).

Frost cloth wise I got actual actual frost cloth (not ususal for me!).  You could use newspaper in a pinch or an old sheet.  If using a sheet just make sure that it doesn’t get too heavy as it’s de-frosting and squash your plant.

Despite the winter chills you can start sowing seeds indoors like I have.  Keep them in your hot water cupboard until they sprout then ease them into the light as soon as you see movement… more about this later.

Keep warm and enjoy the beautiful crisp clear days!

Yes, that’s it! I knew it started with an H… Thanks you! Heliotrope is definitely not a frost tolerant plant, boo
